The new season started with one team, Broadmoor, relocated and re-named Braybrooke. In the move they shed a team and, with other withdrawals, the season starts with just 40 teams probably the lowest in the league’s history.
Sadly two players who appeared during the season last year, Sandy Simpson from Ash and Peter Greenwood-Sleep passed away. Sandy was the last person to win the Ladies Singles Title in the tournament held eighteen months ago.
Champions Bentley A have two results recorded as, faced with later fixture congestion, they brought matches forward. They started with a victory over Central A, 6-4, with Andy Mudie undefeated and Richard Seymour supporting with a duo. This was matched by Central’s Phil Snelson. In their other match, against Tennis A, they could only turn out with a couple of players and succumbed to a 6-4 defeat. Mudie was again unbeaten for Bentley. Tennis A played their scheduled match against Frimley A and won 9-1 so they set the pace in the embryonic league table. Eliot Tilley and Rod Kay each recorded trios whilst Paul Myers won twice. In the remaining match in the First Division Tennis C eased past Tennis D 6-4. Ce Guo, Shaun Newbold and Paul Shakespeare all won twice for the C team with Michael Kwan matching this for the D team.
Just one result so far from the Second Division, a thumping 9-1 victory for Cody B over Frimley C. Kin Chan and Dave Stenning each won three times with Duncan Sibbick chipping in with a duo.
The early leader in the Third Division is Frimley D who notched up a 9-1 success over newly promoted Cody E. The result did not reflect the match with the majority of the games going the full distance. Anthony Connelly and Gary Nicholson each won three times with Tony Harrison supporting with a pair. Ash E beat Fleet B 7-3 with both Jo Bartlett and Amy Parkes unbeaten. Ash D also won 7-3, this against Tennis G. Margaret Thornton and Les Knight each won three times for Ash. Cody C and Crawley Ridge A shared the points with Crawley Ridge’s Ken Thompson the star player with a maximum. Russell Gibbs supported with a pair and Jock Docherty won twice for Cody.
In the Fourth Division Ash H started their campaign with a 6-4 victory over Cody F. Brian Lunn won all three for Ash with team-mate Ben Carr winning a couple as did Cody’s John Asprey. Braybrooke B, despite only having two players, overcame Frimley E 6-4. Mick Rumbold secured a trio for Braybrooke with Malcolm Codd supporting with a pair. Fleet C beat Ash F 7-3 with Andrew Hook winning all three and John Allan getting a pair for Fleet. Bob Powney replied with a couple for Ash. Ash G beat their J team 7-3 with Dave Brown getiing all the J team’s points. Bob Murrell, Chris Payne and Roger Fletcher all won twice for the G team. Tennis H and Tennis J split the points with Martin Evans winning all three for the H squad. Tom Ette and John Page each won twice for the J team.
