Champions Bentley A stamped their authority on the first week of matches in the Aldershot & District Table Tennis First Division with an 8-2 beating of last seasons nearest rivals Broadmoor A, as ever Andy Mudie showing the way with an easy three.
Central A should put up a challenge this year and started in fine style with a 10-0 whitewash of new boys Old Woking, Paul Myers, Pete Millard and Denny Perrett all picked three scalps. Graham Watts and Koray Ozcan both won all three as Ash A opened with an 8-2 success against Frimley A. Ash B, who struggled for most of last season were glad to have Nick Mills back in the side as they edged Tennis B 6-4, Mills and Dave Gilham both picked up a couple but it was Kevin Bown for the losing side that ended the night with a good maximum.
Bentley B leapt into Division 2 action in stunning style, not dropping a single game during a 10-0 romp over Broadmoor B, Eric North, Bob Walker and Andy Cunningham all easing to hat tricks. Fleet CC A were easy 9-1 winners against a two man Ash C, Sameer Pathak and David Joyce both with two out of two. Dario Cereda was the man of the match for Cody B, who beat Frimley C 8-2 thanks to his trio. Frimley B overcame Tennis D 6-4 in an incredibly hard fought encounter in which Robert Brittain scrapped his way to three good wins. Nineteen of the nights games were decided by just two points and only the doubles was won three straight.
Ash D and Frimley D got their Division 3 campaigns under way with 8-2 triumphs, Terry French of Ash and Frimley’s Tony Harrison were both unbeatable. Dave Hewitt was one unlucky man for Cody D, losing all his matches in the fifth including a 16-14 reverse against Andy Murdock. Peter Killick backed up Murdock’s two with three of his own as Tennis E ran out 7-3 victors. Cody’s C team fared slightly better, maximums for John Harvey and Jack Docherty leading them home 6-4 against Tennis F. Pu Zhang started his season off in style with three easy wins as his Broadmoor C overcame Ash F 7-3.
Terry Kavanagh, Bob Pouney and Ray Mears all won twice as Ash J beat Ash H 7-3 in Div 4, however all three bowed to league supremo Dave Brown who marked his Aldershot return with a valiant hat trick. Cody F ran out easy 9-1 winners at home to Ash G, Vic King and Nigel Roberts each with a trio to their names. A close contest was played out by Fleet CC C and Frimley E, Paul Phelan’s triple helping the latter to a five all draw. Ash K lead the way at the top however as they matched Bentley B’s feat of not dropping an end all night, Dave Phillips, Ron Davies and Basil Warner all unbeaten in a 10-0 trumping of Fleet CC D.
