Week 2 of the Aldershot & District Table Tennis League and in Division 4 it was Fleet CC B and Ash G who both compiled comprehensive wins. Jeremy Fox (3), Marge Massey (2) and Chris Carter (3) led Fleet to a 9-1 thrashing of Ash J, a feat matched by Ash G. Terry Kavanagh and Bill Abbott both unbeaten in the win over Fleet CC C. Farnham Cohesion B proved too much for a two man Cody F for whom James Hodges bagged a brave two, but he couldn’t halt an 8-2 reverse. Three routine wins for Keith Johnson led Tennis J to a 7-3 victory over Ash K, the performance of the night however must go to Ash’s Paul Gilbey who stormed back from two ends down to conquer Graham Dorey in a classic. There was no separating Ash H and Frimley F as Dave Phillips’ five set win over Sash Shagauchi snatched a share of the spoils for Ash. Phillips’ three was too much for Shagauchi (2) and Kevin Bissell (2).
Cody C got the better of Bentley B 6-4 in Division 3. Dave Hewitt and Tony McDowell both bagged a couple for the triumphant visitors but neither could get past Bob Walker who’s three for the home side was unfortunately in vain. Tennis G showed them how it’s done by inflicting a 9-1 defeat on a busy Cody C. Gordon Courtney and Keith Bredin eash cruising to three wins. Tennis F matched their club mates with a 9-1 stroll over Ash F. Colin Baggott (3), Paul Jarvis (3) and Graham Marshall, who matched his two for the G team, were the men on a mission. Only one game went the distance as Frimley D whitewashed their E team 10-0, Gary Nicholson, Robeen Roopun and Peter Glass proving too good on the night. Dean Robertson came from two down to triumph over John Ball in the match that ultimately decided a tight clash as Farnham Cohesion A beat Frimley C 7-3. Chris Saville and Geoff Green both supporting well with two wins each. Tennis H put up a brave fight but went down 6-4 to Ash E, Dave Bentall (2), Terry French (2) and Sheila Pretty (1) contributed for the victors but were all bettered by an on form Gordon Courtney. Simon Goodall held his nerve to beat Andy Stenning in the last game of the night to help Bentley B sneak past Cody D 6-4, Bob Walker the star man for Bentley with a triple.
Just two matches to report in Division 2 as Tennis C roared to victory over their D team. With the scores tied at three all following a tight doubles, the C team strung together four straight wins to run out 7-3 victors. Dave Jarvis and Dave Hewitt with three each were ably supported by Jack Davies who notched the final point of the evening. Another tight encounter was decided by Sameer Pathak who’s maximum for Fleet CC A saw off a spirited Ash D. Dave Joyce bagged two as Fleet edged it 6-4.
In Division 1 Bentley A beat Cody A 8-2 but of the three games that went to five Cody were 2 sets to 1 up in each of them. Micky Lang won two of these on his way to a maximum, and was matched by Andy Mudie who cruised to a hat trick of three straight wins. Dave Phelps was back to form with a treble that led Central B to a 6-4 win over Tennis B for whom Graham Bartles claimed the impressive scalp of Robin Pretty. Ash A edged rivals Ash B 6-4, Chris Hazlehurst (3) and Tony Amies (2) weighing in against Nigel Care’s double for the B team. A good free hitting encounter between Nigel and Tony was the standout match, Nigel sneaking it 12-10 in the fifth.
